Episode 308

Your Potential Is a Trap!

What if the word potential was actually holding you back?

Karl Phillips grew up in Barbados being told he had it — by teachers, coaches, piano instructors. And somewhere along the way, hearing it over and over made him feel like he already had what he hadn't yet built. A biology degree. A master's degree. Counting seagulls on an island in the Pacific. Applying to every police department in Michigan and getting denied — even to volunteer.

Then he met Eric Thomas. Then CJ. Then Jamal.

And even surrounded by some of the most driven voices in personal development, Karl found himself doing the one thing that stops most people cold: comparing himself to everyone around him instead of going inside.

In this episode, Karl shares the journey behind his book Moving Past Potential: Break Free of Self-Limitations to Unleash Your Best Life — the real story of how he went from lost to leading, what faith actually means when you live it out loud, and why 1 in 3 people will face exactly what he faced.

One of those conversations you'll want to replay.

Speaker A:

One of my friends says, if you don't have a vision for your life, somebody else does.

Speaker B:

That's a fact.

Speaker A:

So it's just that simple.

Speaker A:

If you are not sure what path you're going on, guess what?

Speaker A:

You're gonna end up on somebody else's path for you.

Speaker A:

And let me just take a wild guess.

Speaker A:

They may not wake up thinking that they want you to be a millionaire today.

Speaker B:

All right, welcome back, everybody.

Speaker B:

We're here again.

Speaker B:

Another edition of the Music Explored podcast.

Speaker B:

Really excited about this one.

Speaker B:

There's this saying that it takes a village to raise a child.

Speaker B:

And I was thinking it takes a team to win games, but to maintain, like, a winning streak and to be really good, you need to have a solid team, you need to have role players, and you need to have a strong organization behind you.

Speaker B:

This is my intro to you, Carl.

Speaker B:

So I was thinking, because I know that you are a member of a solid team, but you are a super strong role player on that team, and without you, the success of the team wouldn't quite be the same.

Speaker B:

It would be a different team without you.

Speaker B:

So I'm really honored, privileged to have you with me today.

Speaker B:

And if you don't know who I'm talking about, if you're not watching and you're listening, it's Mr. Carl Phillips.

Speaker B:

How you doing today, sir?

Speaker A:

Oh, Anthony, let me tell you something.

Speaker A:

I am blessed beyond measure, man.

Speaker A:

Again, people hear me say this, and I keep saying it, but I woke up today.

Speaker A:

And I don't mean to make that sound light and cliche, right?

Speaker A:

But, like, I. I joke and I say everything else we could figure out.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Like, I'm.

Speaker A:

I'm up.

Speaker A:

You know, I'm on top of the world, man.

Speaker A:

I'm.

Speaker A:

I'm.

Speaker B:

I'm feeling good, man.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I was listening to this thing.

Speaker B:

There's this dude.

Speaker B:

It's an old interview from this dude I was listening to, but I've been.

Speaker B:

I've been replaying it for, like, three weeks now.

Speaker B:

Like, almost every day.

Speaker B:

At least play a clip of, like, a part of it.

Speaker B:

Because he talks about this thing where he's on a winning streak, and he'll find a simple win like that.

Speaker B:

Like, I'm.

Speaker B:

I'm alive, I'm up, I'm breathing, and just let that winning streak continue throughout the day.

Speaker B:

So me and my wife, we've just been on that.

Speaker B:

Like, she'll text me and be like, I'm on a winning streak.

Speaker B:

And it's just something that we're just continuing throughout, no matter what Comes our way.

Speaker B:

Hey, we're in a good place.

Speaker B:

It's a blessing to be here.

Speaker B:

But as I mentioned, the thing about the role players, I want to start off with something.

Speaker B:

I found some similarities in listening to you with the way that I've processed things throughout my life.

Speaker B:

And there's this word that.

Speaker B:

That I know is a big deal and a big part of your life that haunted me.

Speaker B:

For example, if somebody had asked me once upon a. I'm gonna say once upon a time, but even maybe more so recently, too, if somebody had asked me what my greatest fear was.

Speaker B:

A lot of people will say, like, dying or, you know, other things, but mine always got me this strange look.

Speaker B:

And I thought I was a little bit crazy until I heard you talk about it because mine was not reaching my potential.

Speaker B:

And when I heard you talk about this, I was like, oh, my goodness, there's other people like this.

Speaker B:

This isn't just the me thing, where it's, like, caught up on this thing that's supposed to be a good thing, but somehow in my mind, it got all twisted upside down and backwards.

Speaker B:

So I'm gonna hand it off to you right there.

Speaker B:

If we can, you could pick it up where you pick it up, because I know this is a big part of your life as well.

Speaker B:

You've been sharing on this, like, blessing people.

Speaker A:

I'll try to go through the story fast, but I was born, raised in the island of Barbados.

Speaker A:

Little island, you know.

Speaker A:

The longest part of the island, I think, is, like, 22 miles.

Speaker A:

So just to give people perspective, that's the longest part of the island.

Speaker A:

It's 166 square miles.

Speaker A:

So I'm talking about, like, a dot.

Speaker B:

All right.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

You try to find Barbados on a map, dude.

Speaker A:

Like, you see the word just, like, a dot, right?

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker A:

But context.

Speaker A:

Both my parents were teachers.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

So I grew up in a home with education as being a real thing.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So my brother is three years older and younger brother.

Speaker A:

I'm always trying to get ahead.

Speaker A:

My expectations are his expectations.

Speaker A:

Like, you know, I don't have.

Speaker A:

Truthfully, I don't have Carl standards.

Speaker A:

My brother.

Speaker A:

I'm looking at him like, that's where I'm trying to get to.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So just kind of, you know, going through the story, like, I. I went to school a year early just because my mom was a teacher, and she was like, hey, I can see that you're willing and ready to learn, so why am I gonna make you sit here and wait, you know, another year when you can go start learning now, so she spoke to the principal, whatever.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I go to school.

Speaker A:

And again, we did.

Speaker A:

We did.

Speaker A:

The system in Barbados is based on the British system.

Speaker A:

So our school system is a little different.

Speaker A:

We just literally do primary school in high school.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

There's no middle school.

Speaker A:

That construct.

Speaker A:

So, dude, I am in school and I fit in.

Speaker A:

Like, I actually get along with everybody.

Speaker A:

And I come like.

Speaker A:

They actually graded us at the end of the first semester.

Speaker A:

And I come like.

Speaker A:

I think it was like 11th in class.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker A:

And everybody's like, oh, my gosh, this kid is intelligent.

Speaker A:

He's gonna go far.

Speaker A:

He's got so much potential.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

Cool.

Speaker A:

I feel great.

Speaker A:

I'm crushing it, right?

Speaker A:

Awesome.

Speaker A:

Fast forward.

Speaker A:

I remember going to.

Speaker A:

And there's so many circumstances throughout my life where I just heard that phrase, oh, this kid is going to go far.

Speaker A:

He's got potential in the game.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

I credit it to exposure.

Speaker A:

Again, my parents are teachers.

Speaker A:

My brother is older, so I'm learning faster with him.

Speaker A:

So if he's playing soccer, I'm playing soccer.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So again, I'm just exposed to more.

Speaker A:

So soccer was another example.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

For those Caribbean folk.

Speaker A:

Football.

Speaker A:

Football.

Speaker A:

I should say the rest of the world outside.

Speaker A:

That's true.

Speaker B:

Yeah, you are right.

Speaker A:

So I'm playing football growing up.

Speaker A:

And again, I'm the young kid, but I'm fast.

Speaker A:

And I remember, like, we had a coach come to our high school.

Speaker A:

And I hear it again, like, yo, this kid has potential.

Speaker B:

There it is again.

Speaker A:

And I'm like, ooh, let's go.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

I go start.

Speaker A:

My parents put us in piano.

Speaker A:

And again, bruh, same story.

Speaker A:

The piano teacher, like, dude, you could be really good.

Speaker A:

Like, you got so much potential.

Speaker A:

I just need you to lock in and practice.

Speaker A:

And I'm like, yo, this is a repeating theme.

Speaker A:

But what happened to me after hearing it so many times, it's like, yo, this hasn't gotten me anywhere.

Speaker A:

Like, I have this distant thing that if I.

Speaker A:

And if I. I will become.

Speaker A:

And again, in context, none of that's bad.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

But what happened to me was it almost made me feel like I already had.

Speaker A:

What?

Speaker A:

I didn't.

Speaker B:

Yes, okay, I understand that.

Speaker A:

So it's like, oh, you're already good.

Speaker A:

Like, everybody can see it's happening.

Speaker A:

So, bruh, I ain't even got to do it.

Speaker B:

Just let it materialize.

Speaker A:

Let me just chill.

Speaker A:

It's gonna happen.

Speaker A:

And spoiler alert, it just doesn't happen like that.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Maybe it did for you.

Speaker A:

Let me just say for me, it did not Happen like that.

Speaker B:

Fair enough.

Speaker A:

You know, so because I started a year, here's when it actually kind of manifested.

Speaker A:

Now, because I started a year ahead, I go to high school a year earlier.

Speaker A:

So you think about kids, and again, we start high school at 11, 12 years old.

Speaker A:

Again, different systems, right?

Speaker B:

Very different system.

Speaker A:

But you know that those ages a year is a big developmental difference.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So I'm the smallest kid around.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And what happens to me now is that there's this kind of weird thing starts happening in my brain where it's like, wait a minute, I was all this before, but now I'm not seeing it.

Speaker A:

Now I'm seeing I'm the smallest kid.

Speaker A:

Now I'm seeing I'm the little kid with the glasses.

Speaker A:

Now I'm seeing.

Speaker A:

And I was actually a little chubby.

Speaker A:

Not fat, but a little chubby.

Speaker A:

These are the things that I'm starting to see.

Speaker A:

And it's like, what happened to all that potential stuff?

Speaker A:

That I was going to be the best and I was going to be this and all that?

Speaker A:

I'm not seeing that.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker A:

And because of what I chose to focus on now, I felt like this concept of potential is not really cool.

Speaker A:

Like, it's not benefiting me none.

Speaker A:

Like, I'm still the smallest kid.

Speaker A:

I'm still the.

Speaker A:

You get what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

So, again, wow.

Speaker A:

I'm fast forwarding through life, not trying to rush it, but I want to get you guys to why all this matters.

Speaker A:

That's just history, right?

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

But it matters because now I get to an adult and I follow this path.

Speaker A:

I got potential.

Speaker A:

My parents were teachers.

Speaker A:

I did a degree that I didn't have a plan for.

Speaker A:

Please hear me closely here.

Speaker A:

Because I had potential.

Speaker A:

And everybody knew I was going to be good.

Speaker A:

And I excelled in the sciences.

Speaker A:

And our school system favored sciences over business subjects.

Speaker B:

Okay, so.

Speaker A:

So if you were getting good grades, they steered you into the sciences.

Speaker A:

If your grades weren't that good, you were stared into the business classes.

Speaker B:

Got you.

Speaker B:

So that's why you took that direction.

Speaker A:

So here I am going off into science, undergrad degree in biology, master's degree in biology, and I have no plan to be a doctor.

Speaker A:

I have no plan.

Speaker A:

I never wanted to teach any of these subjects.

Speaker A:

I'm just following potential.

Speaker B:

Jeez.

Speaker A:

Because everybody said, I have potential, I can learn, and I'm going down this path.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And please hear this in context.

Speaker A:

I regret none of it.

Speaker A:

I will redo every single step of it because it got me to where I am Right now.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

But understand that if I could go back, it's like, Carl, who are you and what do you want?

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

Not living up to everybody else's expectations of who you are and who you could be, but who are you and what do you see as your goal?

Speaker A:

And now what.

Speaker A:

How do.

Speaker A:

I want to say, how do you maximize that for your life?

Speaker B:

Your own vision of your.

Speaker A:

My own vision, My own life.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So I get to.

Speaker A:

I'm in my early 20s now with a master's degree in biology.

Speaker A:

And again, I'll give context.

Speaker A:

My master's degree in biology.

Speaker A:

I found myself out on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean counting birds for 14 hours.

Speaker B:

This is a real story.

Speaker A:

This is a real story.

Speaker A:

Counting birds, flying, counting seagull for 14 hours a day.

Speaker A:

Now everybody's just like, what, 100%?

Speaker B:

Do you have any tools or is this just vision?

Speaker A:

I am sitting down there with my.

Speaker A:

I had binoculars.

Speaker A:

That's what I had.

Speaker A:

And I'm counting birds.

Speaker A:

Short version of that.

Speaker A:

It was a research project we're doing.

Speaker A:

My professor that I partnered with, he was into ecology, Right?

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

And they were doing this math modeling thing that they wanted to predict where the birds would be based on the tide, solar elevation, time of day.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

So we're taking these factors and kind of create this big mathematical model.

Speaker A:

And here's what sold me.

Speaker B:

All right?

Speaker A:

Because again, you're still looking at me like, what?

Speaker A:

Who cares?

Speaker A:

Here's what sold me on it.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

For everybody listening.

Speaker A:

Here's what sold me on it.

Speaker A:

He said, this is early pioneering research, but our goal is to be able to understand animals and their pattern so that.

Speaker A:

Let's think, for instance, we can predict where there's going to be a large population of deer in a couple years.

Speaker A:

Think about accidents on the freeway, right?

Speaker A:

So that's their mindset into this research.

Speaker A:

We just happened to pick these birds because he had been studying birds before to kind of start the predictions and how we could do it.

Speaker A:

So, short version of the story, again, some people still like, okay, we still don't care.

Speaker B:

I mean, yes, I get it, but, okay, keep going.

Speaker A:

But again, following this pattern lands me here now, again, I don't regret it.

Speaker A:

I love being outdoors, dude.

Speaker A:

I'm on these little speedboats going back and forth to this island.

Speaker A:

Enjoyed it immensely.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

But still, when I think of a vision for my life, dude, I am.

Speaker A:

Where am I going with this?

Speaker A:

I don't plan to be a scientist.

Speaker A:

I don't plan to be.

Speaker A:

I didn't Want to be a teacher because both my parents were teachers.

Speaker A:

I'm like, I'm never doing that.

Speaker A:

They're bringing home homework every day to grade.

Speaker A:

I want no parts of that.

Speaker A:

Yeah, right?

Speaker A:

So I'm literally, like, stuck now in my early, going probably 22, 23.

Speaker A:

Like, what am I doing?

Speaker A:

Like, where am I going with my life?

Speaker A:

What happened to all the potential that I. I had?

Speaker A:

Where.

Speaker A:

Where is that now?

Speaker A:

Where is it supposed to land me right now?

Speaker B:

I'm lost.

Speaker A:

So this is when again, Spoiler alert, everybody.

Speaker A:

I meet Eric Thomas.

Speaker A:

I meet cj.

Speaker A:

We formed ETA at the time, right?

Speaker A:

And ETA is.

Speaker A:

It was Break the cycle.

Speaker A:

Then we just like, hey, I met Eric, and he was already just like, holy cow, this dude is incredible.

Speaker A:

Yeah, cj.

Speaker A:

They connected a couple.

Speaker A:

Maybe a couple months before I came in.

Speaker A:

So I come into this dynamic duo of dudes that are serious.

Speaker A:

They're about helping people.

Speaker A:

They want to change the world.

Speaker A:

And I'm like, I like this.

Speaker A:

I don't know where potential is, but this I like.

Speaker A:

All right, so here's where I kind of changed paths.

Speaker A:

And I was like.

Speaker A:

I had the realization one day that if when Eric Thomas goes into a room, right?

Speaker A:

It's incredible.

Speaker A:

Like, I watched him at the time, we were doing a lot of schools.

Speaker A:

Like, I'm watching him talk to elementary school kids.

Speaker A:

The parents are in there, the teachers are in there.

Speaker A:

Everybody's leaving with, like, this motivation.

Speaker A:

Like, the kids are getting some.

Speaker A:

And I was like, this is incredible.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

But it ends when we leave the room, right?

Speaker B:

Think about that, right?

Speaker A:

Like, it literally, once you leave the room, just real life, like, your husband call your wife, call the kids.

Speaker A:

This.

Speaker A:

Something happened.

Speaker A:

What are we doing for dinner?

Speaker A:

And not saying that you're not going to stay motivated, but a week or two in, like, it's gone.

Speaker B:

Yeah, it's gone.

Speaker A:

You're just back to regular life.

Speaker A:

And that thing was like, okay, Carl, what can you do?

Speaker A:

I'm like, eric, what?

Speaker A:

Like, cj, like, how can we.

Speaker A:

And I think.

Speaker A:

I don't know if it was Eric or cj at first.

Speaker A:

It was like, oh, let's do video.

Speaker A:

Like, we need to capture this content.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

I was like, that.

Speaker A:

I got y'.

Speaker A:

All.

Speaker A:

I could do that.

Speaker B:

He just knew right away.

Speaker A:

Oh, I was willing to because it was such.

Speaker A:

Let me say it like this, because I was looking so bad for purpose and potential, I was willing to try anything.

Speaker A:

This just happened to be something that actually made sense.

Speaker B:

Got you.

Speaker A:

You got what I'm saying?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Let Me give.

Speaker A:

Let me back up, dude.

Speaker A:

I applied for again.

Speaker A:

I got a degree in biology.

Speaker A:

So I applied, applied to every police department I could think about in the state of Michigan to get into criminal justice.

Speaker A:

I'm like, I can use the science background there.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I got denied for everyone.

Speaker A:

I'm talking about hour three or three, four hour radius.

Speaker A:

I'm applying.

Speaker A:

I got to the point where I was like, yo, I'll volunteer.

Speaker A:

I will just come work for free.

Speaker A:

Because again, I know the track record of Carl.

Speaker A:

Like, he's.

Speaker A:

He's got potential.

Speaker A:

Once you get him in the spot,.

Speaker B:

He can be, all right, I'll show you what I got, bruh.

Speaker A:

Denied, denied, Denied even to volunteer.

Speaker A:

They were like, nope, this is sensitive information we can't give.

Speaker A:

I'm like, okay, I don't know what's going on.

Speaker A:

So meeting Eric and cj, I started.

Speaker A:

Now we go on the spiritual side.

Speaker A:

I'm like, okay, God, this might be something that you were directing in.

Speaker A:

So I'm like, hey, bruh, I ain't going nowhere fast right now, so I'm willing to take the, you know, take on this, and I'll kind of pause there, let you get some in.

Speaker A:

But that's kind of where that started shifting for me now.

Speaker A:

The potential wasn't just potential anymore.

Speaker A:

Now I could see Carl enjoying what he's doing and actually being able to impact the world.

Speaker A:

So that's kind of how we got to that point.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Well, I mean, is that.

Speaker B:

Is it too early in the story to say thank God that you got denied to all those.

Speaker A:

Those applications?

Speaker A:

Not at all.

Speaker A:

Not at all.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker A:

That's.

Speaker A:

That's one of the prayers that I say every day.

Speaker A:

God, thank you for the direction.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Wow, that's.

Speaker B:

That's really something.

Speaker B:

And I mean, really just focusing in on.

Speaker B:

On you and your story.

Speaker B:

Obviously, there's others that played a pivotal role in your development and, like, shifting you over from the path that you were on, which is a path that you.

Speaker B:

I guess you were expected to just based on that whole potential mess before the mess, before you had it figured out.

Speaker B:

Well, this is.

Speaker B:

I was thinking about this for myself just now because potential was a terrible word for me.

Speaker B:

I hated it growing up.

Speaker B:

I didn't know why.

Speaker B:

I don't think I still hate it.

Speaker B:

I think now that I understand, you know, some of the context and what goes with it and how it's mainly based on other people's expectations, I think I've been able to recalibrate that for myself.

Speaker B:

Now I see My potential as who I am, who I can serve, who I can help, how I can benefit this world, my family, my circle, anyone else who's listening right now, maybe even by having you on today, how we can benefit together, that one person, maybe that's just stuck in this little.

Speaker B:

This rat race of trying to figure out what's next.

Speaker B:

So I have now understood that word, and I think I've been able to flip it for myself.

Speaker B:

So I'm gonna own it.

Speaker B:

I'm gonna own it.

Speaker B:

Man.

Speaker B:

It's so weird that that was.

Speaker B:

I was thinking, I was like, why was that such a dirty word?

Speaker B:

Like, when I would say.

Speaker B:

Someone would say, what's your greatest fear?

Speaker B:

And I would say, not dying without reaching my potential.

Speaker B:

And the look I would get is like, man, you could be afraid of so many things.

Speaker B:

What's wrong with you?

Speaker B:

You're a weirdo.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I think one of the things for me is think of potential.

Speaker A:

Again, I wrote about this, but the concept of potential is like, everything has potential.

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So if I were to.

Speaker A:

I'm just grab something near my hand, like, this has potential.

Speaker A:

Like, we're talking about, like, potential energy.

Speaker A:

The right here has potential.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

But it's not doing anything.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

So that, that's.

Speaker A:

That to me, is where I find that the defining difference.

Speaker A:

Potential is just like a word.

Speaker A:

It's a thing.

Speaker A:

Like, it doesn't.

Speaker A:

It needs to be activated.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So if it's just sitting here, it does have potential.

Speaker A:

The moment that I let it go, though, it's over.

Speaker A:

Gravity now takes on and it's doing some work.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So again, you can apply that wherever you want to, but it's like, a lot of people get comfortable with just potential.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And to your point, why it's so serious?

Speaker A:

Like, yo, if I die with the potential that I have in me, why did I live?

Speaker B:

I missed my purpose.

Speaker A:

Right, bro?

Speaker A:

Like, it sounds harsh, but why did I live?

Speaker A:

Why did I.

Speaker A:

Why did I exist on the planet?

Speaker A:

Like, each one of us in some way?

Speaker A:

And I'm going to say most of us underestimate this, but we are in some way responsible for changing the world.

Speaker A:

And I don't say that lightly.

Speaker A:

In some way, I agree.

Speaker A:

It may not be, you know, directly, like, I just did something and Steve Jobs made the iPhone.

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

I impacted this person.

Speaker A:

I taught this student.

Speaker A:

I, you know, I spoke to this person.

Speaker A:

I shared a good word with this person.

Speaker A:

Dude, every one of us has the ability to do something incredible and impact the world.

Speaker B:

I absolutely agree.

Speaker A:

But if it's not activated.

Speaker B:

Huh.

Speaker B:

So now I'm seeing it as like.

Speaker B:

And I wasn't even trying to go down this road, but now I'm seeing words like potential, but I'm seeing right beside it another word that came into my mind while you were speaking, and that was dreams.

Speaker B:

And another word is faith.

Speaker B:

Because when you said activated, these are all words that mean nothing.

Speaker B:

If you're not doing anything, if you're not taking some action, then a dream is just a dream.

Speaker B:

You wake up, you go through life, you go to bed, you have your dream, you wake up, you go through life, you have faith, but you're not activating it.

Speaker B:

You're just believing.

Speaker B:

Maybe I don't even know.

Speaker B:

I don't even know if I could say believing.

Speaker B:

But you just.

Speaker B:

There's a thought that's there, right?

Speaker B:

If there's faith without any action, then it's nothing.

Speaker B:

It's all the same.

Speaker A:

If you get me started on faith, you will need another hour.

Speaker A:

Let me just let you know that.

Speaker A:

Now I'm gonna warn you because.

Speaker A:

And I. I'll try to just.

Speaker A:

I'll try to summarize it.

Speaker A:

Okay, Go ahead.

Speaker A:

So faith is like you said.

Speaker A:

It's another one of those words, man, that is just thrown around, like.

Speaker A:

And I grew up all the time thinking.

Speaker A:

And again, I'm Christian, right?

Speaker A:

So let me put the context.

Speaker A:

I grew up in a church that taught me all about God.

Speaker A:

And you believe in God, and if you have faith, you can move mountains.

Speaker A:

And all the scriptures on top of scriptures.

Speaker B:

Y.

Speaker A:

The thing that was missing was this.

Speaker A:

Faith taught me that God can.

Speaker A:

My understanding of faith was that God can, right?

Speaker A:

Everybody's like, yeah, cool, I agree with that.

Speaker A:

What's wrong with that?

Speaker A:

No, no, no, no, no.

Speaker A:

My understanding of faith now is that God did.

Speaker A:

It's already done.

Speaker A:

So if you believe that it's already done, how do you approach it?

Speaker A:

You cannot approach it the same way as if God will, right?

Speaker A:

There are two different things.

Speaker A:

God will.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

He can.

Speaker A:

He might decide not to.

Speaker B:

He might.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I'm not sure.

Speaker A:

There's wiggle room in there.

Speaker A:

And again, context, if you are communicating with God, dude, bruh, when God operates, it's done.

Speaker A:

He spoke and the world existed.

Speaker A:

It's done, right?

Speaker A:

So now I'm approaching life with like, oh, wait a minute.

Speaker A:

If I believe that it was done.

Speaker A:

If I believe that as though.

Speaker A:

As I look at my kids in the house, and they're knuckleheads and they're not listening and they're untidy, if I look at them as God's finished product 20, 20 years from now, it's done.

Speaker A:

Why am I stressed about you see what I'm saying, right?

Speaker A:

Like, I approach a life differently when I believe that it's done versus it can happen very different.

Speaker A:

Again, activating that faith.

Speaker A:

It's done.

Speaker A:

Operate as though it has already happened.

Speaker A:

And that's a major shift in mindset.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

But now when you approach life, dude, like, God, you woke me up.

Speaker A:

That's what I said.

Speaker A:

God, you woke me up today.

Speaker B:

That's how you start.

Speaker A:

Done, bro.

Speaker A:

The day is done.

Speaker A:

Everything that needs to happen, this interview needed to happen today.

Speaker A:

It.

Speaker A:

It's done.

Speaker A:

Watch this.

Speaker A:

I'm like, bro, there was no prep.

Speaker A:

I didn't read nothing I didn't like.

Speaker A:

No, it's done.

Speaker A:

I believe that God orchestrated this and it's done.

Speaker A:

Whoever needs to hear it.

Speaker A:

You're hearing my voice right now, cuz.

Speaker A:

God orchestrated me to have this conversation with Anthony to make sure you got up and hit the play button.

Speaker A:

It's done.

Speaker A:

So I don't have to panic, I don't have to worry.

Speaker A:

I just got to get up and enjoy what God has already created for me.

Speaker A:

And please, I told you that you got me started.

Speaker B:

No, no, man.

Speaker A:

I'm going to say this.

Speaker A:

We only want to attribute that to the good things.

Speaker B:

Oh, man.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

Careful, careful.

Speaker B:

You.

Speaker A:

No, no, no.

Speaker A:

When the person got sick, that's also done.

Speaker A:

The Bible promises that that has been already worked out for your good.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker A:

Please hear what I'm saying.

Speaker A:

The scripture says and.

Speaker A:

And we know that all things work together for our good.

Speaker A:

Everybody quotes all things work together for a good.

Speaker A:

No, no, no, no.

Speaker A:

I quote.

Speaker A:

And we know.

Speaker A:

And we know because that means it's done.

Speaker A:

God, whatever is best for me in this situation, it is done.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker A:

So now I get to operate free.

Speaker A:

I don't have to worry and be stressed about it.

Speaker A:

God, whatever the best is, it's done.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying?

Speaker B:

And now faith sounds like faith.

Speaker A:

No, it's fair.

Speaker B:

Now, faith doesn't sound like a word.

Speaker B:

Missing some.

Speaker B:

Something.

Speaker A:

Yeah, so, yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to.

Speaker B:

No, no, don't.

Speaker B:

Please don't apologize.

Speaker B:

Thank you.

Speaker B:

And if you didn't get that, you might as well rewind and play it again because.

Speaker A:

Please.

Speaker A:

No.

Speaker A:

It was huge for my life.

Speaker A:

I'm being real.

Speaker A:

That was huge.

Speaker A:

Speaker A:

I'll share it.

Speaker A:

I was going through TSA with all my camera equipment.

Speaker A:

We're shooting the S2S podcast.

Speaker A:

So we flew out to California to shoot it.

Speaker A:

So y' all can imagine.

Speaker A:

I got four or five cameras, all this equipment, microphones, all that.

Speaker A:

That, and I had a lot of it in my hand luggage.

Speaker A:

Going through tsa, of course.

Speaker B:

Keep it safe, dude.

Speaker A:

I'm going through there, and in my mind, I'm like, they about to tear this stuff up.

Speaker A:

I know.

Speaker B:

I'm probably.

Speaker A:

I was probably about 15 minutes a little later than I should have been for the flight.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

And I promise you, going through tsa, they tore my stuff up.

Speaker A:

Watch this.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

We shot a podcast.

Speaker A:

I'm coming back.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker A:

And I'm walking through with Jamal.

Speaker A:

Some of you, if you listen to the S2S podcast, you know Jamal.

Speaker A:

And I was like, maul, they about to tear this up, bruh.

Speaker A:

We gonna have to split up here.

Speaker A:

And he looked at me with the look of, oh, you forgot what faith meant, huh?

Speaker A:

He gave me that look, and he just was like.

Speaker A:

It was like.

Speaker A:

He shrugged it off like, no, it's good.

Speaker A:

We good, bruh.

Speaker A:

And he gave me the reminder, that little shot booster, like, oh, you're right.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

This is an opportunity for me to do the fast thing again.

Speaker A:

I was like, you're right, Ma.

Speaker A:

They ain't touching my bags, bruh.

Speaker A:

Let's go.

Speaker A:

And we started talking about something else.

Speaker A:

Go through tsa, bruh.

Speaker A:

They did not touch a single bag.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker A:

I walked straight through the same that they tore up.

Speaker A:

But for me, I was so geeked, and I'm sharing it.

Speaker A:

Somebody might be like, that's small, or for you it is.

Speaker A:

But for me, I operated in the faith that it was done.

Speaker A:

And I'm telling.

Speaker A:

I walked through that airport, like, man, whatever.

Speaker A:

And I walked straight through, grabbed my bags, and went on.

Speaker A:

I had a. I had enough time to stop and have dinner with C.J.

Speaker A:

And Jamal.

Speaker A:

Airport.

Speaker A:

Because I didn't have to think about tsa.

Speaker A:

Tsa.

Speaker A:

On the flip side, when I was coming, took up the whole time that.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying, that just that little shift in faith now changed my whole day.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

It's done.

Speaker B:

That's right.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker B:

And that's.

Speaker B:

And that's the power of the faith, and it's.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker B:

Man.

Speaker B:

I might have to play that back myself, man.

Speaker A:

Me too.

Speaker A:

Hey, me too.

Speaker A:

I promise.

Speaker B:

I'm sitting here, like, trying to just process some of that at the same time in real time.

Speaker B:

But that.

Speaker B:

That.

Speaker B:

That.

Speaker B:

That's, like, a perfect example of what I.

Speaker B:

What I was thinking.

Speaker B:

I was like, there's no Lack.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

There's no lack in us.

Speaker B:

There's no lack in what we can do.

Speaker B:

And there's no reason to be disappointed in what we can do when we're given right now.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

I can't be 20 years later me, that version of me today.

Speaker B:

It wouldn't make sense.

Speaker B:

I don't know who that will be.

Speaker B:

But right now I have every day to be grateful, to have faith, to see that I've reached my potential today.

Speaker B:

Knowing that I can be that much better at the end of today.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

I think now I'm seeing it's that.

Speaker B:

It's the small incremental growth that really matters.

Speaker A:

There it is.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And that's the piece that was missing before.

Speaker A:

When people talk about you having potential.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

Like, it says nothing what, what you just said.

Speaker A:

It's like, hey, I wake up every single day and I spend time with God.

Speaker A:

I wake up every single day and I spend time with my family.

Speaker A:

I wake up every single day and I work out.

Speaker A:

I spend time on my body.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying, dude?

Speaker A:

Every single day.

Speaker A:

Watch this.

Speaker A:

I am so removed from the, the, the future or whatever that looks like because everything I'm doing now already determined who that person is.

Speaker B:

What you're doing now, that's crazy.

Speaker A:

Everything that I'm doing now determines who that person is.

Speaker A:

If I'm spending time with God, if I spend time with my wife and kids, if I'm spending time on my body, if I'm spending time working on my finance.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Everybody.

Speaker A:

Everything I do now sets up the Carl ten years from now.

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

So I'm really exhibiting all my potential now for the next 20 years.

Speaker A:

If I really.

Speaker B:

That's what it is.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

You follow it.

Speaker B:

You're in it today.

Speaker A:

We are so reward focused.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Thing is a goal and you accomplish the goal.

Speaker A:

It's like, no, if you can get what you just said, if you can get into those small, consistent daily steps, that's the answer.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

You live your life to the full and get everything out of it.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I've never had the thought that the future could really be a distraction until this moment right now when we're talking as you're saying that I was like, you could get so caught up in what tomorrow looks like that you forget today.

Speaker B:

And I was guilty of that because I would work, work, work, and I would.

Speaker B:

I don't know if I.

Speaker B:

There's a word I used to use.

Speaker B:

I used to.

Speaker B:

I used to think to Myself, I'm task oriented.

Speaker B:

So it'd be about getting stuff done.

Speaker B:

Done.

Speaker B:

And I would be proud of myself.

Speaker B:

But people would be like, you never celebrate.

Speaker B:

Someone would congratulate me on some little thing or some big thing I did.

Speaker B:

And in my mind I'm like, okay, cool.

Speaker B:

It's a small step towards this bigger thing that I want to do.

Speaker B:

So moving right on.

Speaker B:

I can't get stuck on celebrating.

Speaker B:

And I would even judge people if they're celebrating for these things that I would consider small wins too.

Speaker B:

And now I'm celebrating everything, man.

Speaker B:

And I feel so much better for it.

Speaker B:

And I feel like there's so much more that not only am I getting out of it that I can offer to people because it's also not nice.

Speaker B:

I realize, you know, I have a family.

Speaker B:

It's not nice for them to want to celebrate me.

Speaker B:

And I don't want to have anything to do with the celebration.

Speaker A:

Anthony, you're gonna laugh at me.

Speaker A:

Last night I literally told my kids.

Speaker A:

We were out walking, sun's going down.

Speaker A:

My kids were like, hey, can we watch a movie?

Speaker A:

Dude, this is a school night.

Speaker A:

Absolutely not.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

I heard that in terms of.

Speaker A:

That's the Carl that follows the rules.

Speaker A:

Right, right, right.

Speaker A:

But then I thought about it.

Speaker B:

It.

Speaker A:

Okay, so if you go home and spend an hour and a half with your kids enjoying a movie together, what changes?

Speaker A:

Like, what really changes again?

Speaker B:

Yeah, you're right.

Speaker A:

I'm not trying to.

Speaker A:

This is not parental advice.

Speaker A:

Yes, yes, yes.

Speaker A:

Carl is in life right now.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I am going to put that time in with my family now because again, what's that doing for my relationship with my kids 10 years from now?

Speaker B:

Right now?

Speaker A:

Did I let him stay for 2 o' clock in the morning?

Speaker A:

Absolutely not.

Speaker A:

By 10, like 10 something, they were, you know, ready for bed.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah, right.

Speaker A:

It still was a context.

Speaker A:

But the answer for me would have been like an absolute no.

Speaker A:

We got to do this.

Speaker A:

We got now.

Speaker A:

I'm like, dude, we got today.

Speaker A:

Let's enjoy this moment.

Speaker B:

Let's enjoy.

Speaker B:

Especially if you could say together.

Speaker A:

We walked as a family together.

Speaker A:

We came back, watched.

Speaker A:

I told the kids, here's the rule.

Speaker A:

My wife and I were walking.

Speaker A:

They were on their bikes.

Speaker A:

We walked maybe like a mile away.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I was like, y' all gotta go home now, get everything done, tidy up the house, wash the dishes, all that.

Speaker A:

And when we get back and it's done, it's done.

Speaker A:

We got that, Then we're done.

Speaker A:

That's it.

Speaker A:

So I'm like, oh, let's watch a movie, relax, enjoy the time together.

Speaker A:

Because I'm not going to let the problems of tomorrow and we got to get up and this got to happen.

Speaker A:

I got to do a podcast like that tomorrow, and I'm.

Speaker A:

It has its place, but that should not be present of my.

Speaker A:

With my family.

Speaker A:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

Let's capitalize on this.

Speaker A:

But, yeah, and you're doing all the.

Speaker B:

Right things that you're prepared for tomorrow regardless, so you don't have to be on guard.

Speaker B:

Like, tomorrow is the enemy.

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker B:

You can welcome tomorrow.

Speaker B:

Now you're waking up and saying, thank God it's another day.

Speaker A:

I went to bed at.

Speaker A:

I don't know what time, but I Woke up at 5 this morning, went to the gym.

Speaker A:

Like, nothing changed in my life.

Speaker A:

It was an hour and a half with the kids.

Speaker A:

As a matter of fact, I gained something additional in my life.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

That's a fact.

Speaker B:

Yeah, man.

Speaker B:

I can't even lie.

Speaker B:

I had a whole bunch of questions and things I wanted to kind of pick your brain on, and the time flew by just on this.

Speaker B:

So I'm going to assume that this is where we were meant to be today.

Speaker B:

I still want to respect your time, so I have to ask you to come back and we can chat further on another occasion.

Speaker B:

For sure.

Speaker A:

It'll be a pleasure.

Speaker B:

Yeah, man.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And I'll pick your brain a little further.

Speaker B:

But I know we mentioned it, but we didn't directly mention it, so please shout out the book, let people know where this conversation and this subject matter can kind of continue.

Speaker B:

Picking your brain and hearing more about this.

Speaker A:

A lot of this.

Speaker A:

So I went through a phase where, as Anthony's asking, like, all of these questions came to me and I didn't know the answers.

Speaker A:

I really did it.

Speaker A:

Like, yo, what am I doing?

Speaker A:

Who am I?

Speaker A:

What am I supposed to be doing?

Speaker A:

And again, I'm around Eric Thomas, I'm around cj, Jamal.

Speaker A:

And these guys are just, you know, like, every day they wake up, like, it seems like they're running and going.

Speaker A:

And I found myself just doing this comparison thing, and it was just like, something is not right, Carl.

Speaker A:

Like, what's happening?

Speaker A:

And, you know, again, they're my brother.

Speaker A:

So we talk about this, and CJ was the person that just kind of helped.

Speaker A:

I mean, all of them in their own regard.

Speaker A:

But cj, a couple conversations, he's like, dude, you're just spending too much time watching us.

Speaker B:

Ah, okay.

Speaker A:

And again, back to, like, who are You.

Speaker A:

What do you need to do?

Speaker A:

So that turned into me.

Speaker A:

Like, you know what?

Speaker A:

I don't know, but I'm gonna start getting up earlier, trying to spend time with God and writing.

Speaker A:

And I would just write and write.

Speaker A:

And as I started writing, like, stories would come back to me.

Speaker A:

Like, Carl, why are you the way you are?

Speaker A:

You talk to beginning about, you know, that team player.

Speaker A:

Why are you such a support guy?

Speaker A:

Like, I don't desire to be the dude that's at the front.

Speaker A:

I don't desire to be Jordan.

Speaker A:

I don't desire to be Pippin.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

I'm cool being Rodman.

Speaker B:

Like, I got my role, role player.

Speaker A:

Hey, I don't know if people love Draymond Green, but, you know, again, he adds to the team as that solid, you know, dude.

Speaker A:

Not.

Speaker A:

Not the foolishness, guys.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

But yes, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

Like, he's a solid four.

Speaker A:

If he.

Speaker A:

Sometimes he's going to be on three.

Speaker A:

He's going to get you on defense every time.

Speaker A:

Like, I'm.

Speaker A:

I'm comfortable being that guy.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And it took a while for me.

Speaker A:

I won't go into the assessment on all that now.

Speaker A:

But we.

Speaker A:

There's an assessment that we have to help me to identify it and get.

Speaker A:

How do I want to say and get okay with how God designed me.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

And not as an excuse to grow in other areas, but to understand, oh, I have preferences.

Speaker A:

These are my desires.

Speaker A:

This is kind of my natural tendency.

Speaker A:

Once I started understanding that, it's like, oh, right, now this makes sense.

Speaker A:

Here's your superpower, Carl.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And you're so busy looking at everybody else's superpower that you're missing yours and not even able to capitalize on yours.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

All of this turned into a book.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

The book, as you could.

Speaker A:

As you could imagine, I called the book Moving past potential.

Speaker A:

That's it.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker B:

Love it.

Speaker A:

Because.

Speaker A:

And I just made the subtitle break free of self limitations to unleash your best life.

Speaker A:

The reality is powerful.

Speaker A:

I was not living my best life.

Speaker A:

I.

Speaker A:

Even though I was exposed to so much traveling with ecj, doing, you know, doing things I loved.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

It was a part of me that just still felt like I'm not sure.

Speaker A:

And it was because I was comparing and looking externally and.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

The process of writing the book helped me to turn that thing around.

Speaker A:

And look, internally, I started just writing and remembering my childhood stories.

Speaker A:

A lot of stuff.

Speaker A:

You heard me talk about the birds and, you know, all that.

Speaker A:

It was like, oh, I had to go back and reflect on that.

Speaker A:

Like, oh, this makes sense.

Speaker A:

Oh, that's how I got there.

Speaker A:

Oh.

Speaker A:

Then to understand from the study of the assessment, 30% of the world thinks like Carl does.

Speaker A:

So there's a whole audience.

Speaker A:

One third of the world, roughly, is going through what Carl has gone through.

Speaker A:

Or at some point we'll go through that.

Speaker A:

So I was like, you know what?

Speaker A:

I want to help them.

Speaker A:

So let me create this document and show you.

Speaker A:

Here's Carl's pathway that it took, and here's how Carl is growing past that now.

Speaker A:

So we had the whole potential thing, but now we're moving past that.

Speaker A:

And, man, yeah, the book turned into a live event.

Speaker A:

The event turned into a mastermind.

Speaker A:

And I'll be honest, it blew my mind because I didn't have those plans.

Speaker B:

I loved hearing about it.

Speaker B:

I remember.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I'll be honest.

Speaker A:

I didn't have those plans.

Speaker A:

But again, the whole concept of just, okay, so if this is what you're capable of, and I'll say this and stop.

Speaker A:

The website is thegcguide.com and GC stands for grounds crew, right?

Speaker A:

So the gcguide.com.

Speaker A:

But the thing that's so important, man, is that, like, when you understand your role and how pivotal it is, like I said, every one of us has a world changing task.

Speaker A:

Every one of us has a world changing vision.

Speaker A:

If we spend the time to find it, we're so distracted.

Speaker A:

Like, there's so much going on.

Speaker A:

We're so distracted.

Speaker A:

Whether it's politics or, you know, finances or whatever it is, we're so distracted that everybody's trying to make money to pay the bill and not realizing that the thing that pays the bill should really come from in here.

Speaker A:

I saw you, man.

Speaker A:

You got me so riled up right now.

Speaker A:

I'm gonna say this and stop.

Speaker A:

I saw a movie clip recently, and I don't know the name of the movie.

Speaker A:

Somebody just shared it in my community, okay?

Speaker A:

And there was a guy being fired from his job, right?

Speaker A:

He's sitting down at the desk and it's his employer and like, I guess his administrative assistant.

Speaker A:

And they're just, you know, breaking the news to him.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So the guy just starts whining like, y' all don't understand.

Speaker A:

Like, life got.

Speaker A:

This is happening.

Speaker A:

My daughter's in college, and y' all don't get it.

Speaker A:

Y' all don't know.

Speaker A:

Y' all don't care about people.

Speaker A:

He just went down.

Speaker A:

All true, okay?

Speaker A:

The guy looked at his resume and picked it up.

Speaker A:

The boss and he started reading, reading his resume.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

And he's like, man, you went to culinary school.

Speaker A:

Oh, wow.

Speaker A:

And you worked here as a chef and also here.

Speaker A:

And then this was the question that blew my mind.

Speaker A:

He asked him, so how much were you first paid to get you to give up on your dream?

Speaker B:

Ooh.

Speaker B:

Oh, man.

Speaker A:

That's what's happening to probably 98% of us right now.

Speaker A:

We've been paying here.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And we started paying bills.

Speaker A:

And now you're trapped in this system that does not allow you to find time, to go internally and find who God designed you to be, who God has naturally gifted you to be.

Speaker A:

There your million dollars is inside of you.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker A:

You took this check.

Speaker A:

You took this because it was some immediate demand, or you just, you know, instant gratification.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And now, 30 years later, 10 years later, 15 years later, you're like, I'm stuck.

Speaker A:

This happened to happen.

Speaker A:

You have not gone inside.

Speaker A:

That's all it comes down to.

Speaker A:

So that's the whole premise of the book.

Speaker A:

Like, let's go inside and figure out who we are, who God designed us to be.

Speaker A:

And I'll say it like this.

Speaker A:

Find what you love and let that thing kill you.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

That's powerful.

Speaker B:

I should just let that.

Speaker B:

Let that resonate.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker B:

You know that example you gave from that.

Speaker B:

That clip, That's.

Speaker B:

That's crazy, man.

Speaker B:

And.

Speaker B:

And I was sharing a little bit of what I do with you before we started here, but just.

Speaker B:

And it's a little bit more the norm now.

Speaker B:

I mean, we're creators, so to be doing creative type of work, as you mentioned, even business when you were in school, just wasn't really something that people were taking seriously.

Speaker B:

So imagine what we're doing now, Music and all the editing and all that different stuff.

Speaker B:

So when I told people I was going to start this, you'd hear a couple things.

Speaker B:

One's the obvious.

Speaker B:

Like.

Speaker B:

Like when you're going to get a real job, that sort of thing.

Speaker B:

You know, that's a tough hustle.

Speaker B:

And I was always like, no, the tough hustle would be me knowing what's in my heart to do and not doing it, thinking that I'm going to find time on the side somewhere later in life to get back to it.

Speaker B:

That, to me, was always crazy.

Speaker B:

So, yeah, that.

Speaker B:

That.

Speaker A:

That's powerful.

Speaker A:

That stuck with me.

Speaker A:

And I'm just saying to people, like, what brings you happiness?

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

I talk about being alive today.

Speaker A:

Like, what's the point of me being alive but doing 90% of the things that I don't enjoy.

Speaker B:

You're like very strong question.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

Like what brings you happiness?

Speaker A:

And if you don't know what brings you happiness, guess what you, you gonna go with.

Speaker A:

One of my friends says, if you don't have a vision for your life, somebody else does.

Speaker B:

That's a fact.

Speaker A:

So it's just that simple.

Speaker A:

If you are not sure what path you're going on, guess what you're gonna end up on somebody else's path for you.

Speaker A:

And let me just take a wild guess.

Speaker A:

They may not wake up thinking that they want you to be a millionaire today.

Speaker B:

They may not wake up thinking they.

Speaker A:

Want you to spend a blissful time with your wife and family today.

Speaker A:

They may not thinking that about you.

Speaker A:

They may just wake up thinking, if I can get you to work eight hours today, it'll help me spend blissful time with my wife, it'll help me become a multi millionaire.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So until we stop and I tell people all the time, don't make it like it has to be an immediate thing.

Speaker A:

Like today I'm gonna spend 16 hours and map out my whole life.

Speaker A:

No, no, no, no.

Speaker A:

Give yourself 30 minutes a day.

Speaker A:

Carve out 30 minutes for yourself a day and give yourself a year or two years.

Speaker A:

Hey, in the next two years, everything inside of me will be out.

Speaker A:

I don't know if it's a course, it's a program, it's whatever it is, right?

Speaker A:

Two years.

Speaker A:

But it starts with, let me at least put 30 minutes a day into me just thinking, who am I?

Speaker A:

What do I love?

Speaker A:

How can I implement that into my day today?

Speaker A:

Watch this.

Speaker A:

The biggest change happened for me when I thought, and again, this is my process, guys.

Speaker A:

I, this is Carl's process.

Speaker A:

I was like, man, I do want to spend time with my wife, man, I do want to work out, I do want to do this.

Speaker A:

So trial and error.

Speaker A:

I started working out late in the evening, right.

Speaker A:

I didn't work well, right?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I'm downstairs on the treadmill for two hours, like I'm getting it in and my wife was like, dude, we hadn't spent any time together.

Speaker A:

Like, what are you doing?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So here I am thinking like, okay, so I got to give up fitness, so I'm gonna spend time with my wife.

Speaker A:

Yep, we gotta re reprogram this.

Speaker A:

No, no, no.

Speaker A:

What I had to do was find the right time to get my workout in.

Speaker A:

I went to the gym 5:00 clock this morning.

Speaker A:

When I got back home, at like 6:30, my wife was still asleep.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

So now I can get time with her.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

Watch the movie with the family last night.

Speaker A:

Go.

Speaker A:

Still get the workout, still get the same.

Speaker A:

My day still goes the same, but I've just reprogrammed it.

Speaker A:

Like, where do I fit the thing in that brings me happiness?

Speaker A:

If I love it, I'm going to find a way to do it.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying?

Speaker B:

That's a fact.

Speaker A:

And it doesn't have to be a big monstrous change in your life.

Speaker A:

It could be like, my workout is roughly 45 minutes.

Speaker B:

And that'll get it done.

Speaker A:

It'll get it done.

Speaker A:

So I'm challenging people to just find the thing that you love and start implementing that.

Speaker A:

And I'll warn you, in a good way.

Speaker A:

Watch the snowball effect happen.

Speaker A:

Because once you start feeling good from the workout, man, I don't know if I should eat that.

Speaker A:

That.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker B:

Your choices change throughout the day.

Speaker A:

I'm just telling you, you start one good habit, and all of a sudden it starts to unravel and unravel in the best way ever.

Speaker A:

Now I watch myself go from that person that I don't know when I'm gonna work out to now.

Speaker A:

Not only working out, meditating, going outside and grounding, putting my feet in the grass, listening to binaural beats.

Speaker A:

From the one activity I'm telling you of y', all, it has just expanded into this whole thing.

Speaker A:

Like, holy crap, watch this.

Speaker A:

I heard a lot of rich people talk about their morning routines.

Speaker A:

Guess what?

Speaker A:

I just found my own morning routine.

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker A:

It keeps me energized and pumped up.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I joke and I say I love no matter what happens today.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker A:

I get to wake up tomorrow morning and do the things that I love anyway.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah, that's my morning.

Speaker A:

Like, I get to do it.

Speaker A:

You see what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

So before I got to fast the world do with my kids, wife, whatever.

Speaker A:

Yeah, dude.

Speaker A:

I get to spend time with God, and I get to spend time with Carl and enjoy that.

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker B:

So you don't have to fit it.

Speaker A:

In, bro, I just gotta make.

Speaker A:

I just gotta watch this.

Speaker A:

I just gotta make it through today and get to bed.

Speaker A:

And tomorrow I'm just like, let's go.

Speaker B:

Oh, man.

Speaker B:

I'm the same way.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I'm back.

Speaker A:

So that's what I'm telling people.

Speaker A:

I understand that we're in circumstances now that you can't just do what you want.

Speaker A:

It's a little yeah, but I'm saying shift your mindset and do some.

Speaker A:

Do something.

Speaker A:

Don't just keep going and thinking it's going to get better.

Speaker A:

It's not.

Speaker A:

That's going to get worse.

Speaker B:

So I'm hearing that, Carl, I'm hearing you say that small, consistent action is better than trying to take a huge step that you can't maintain on a consistent basis.

Speaker B:

So shifting your day around.

Speaker B:

And you know what I'm thinking, and I know you really got to go now, so I'll make this quick point and then I'll let you shout out where people can find you and all that.

Speaker B:

But I'm really thinking that when you made these small changes, these realizations and, like, just changing the program of what you're even, just what your day looks like, let alone your life, you've kind of reshaped and reframed your identity.

Speaker B:

And there's a lot that goes with that.

Speaker B:

And I think that's the part of where the snowball comes from.

Speaker B:

Because now you're seeing yourself, or I'm seeing myself in a very different light.

Speaker B:

So now the decisions are based on who I am.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

And I think that's a huge thing that I just heard from what you're saying.

Speaker B:

I love that, sir.

Speaker B:

I really love that.

Speaker B:

All right, Please let people know where they can find the book, how they can follow the rest of your journey on social media or wherever else, please.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker A:

So don't laugh at me, but I am actually not on social media like that.

Speaker A:

Don't laugh.

Speaker B:

Fair enough.

Speaker B:

Fair enough.

Speaker A:

I'm a dinosaur.

Speaker A:

I might be the one.

Speaker A:

One in a million.

Speaker A:

That's not.

Speaker A:

But again, I still, you know, I have access.

Speaker A:

So you can.

Speaker A:

If anybody wants to check on Instagram, you could go to S2S podcast.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker A:

I check it occasionally.

Speaker A:

But the book, you can go to thegcguide.com thegcguide.com and get the book there.

Speaker A:

And again, the book goes into a community.

Speaker A:

I got a who coaching.

Speaker A:

Like, we got a whole pathway there for anybody that's going through this and you need help getting out of it.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

My job wasn't just, hey, I figured it out.

Speaker A:

No, no, no, no.

Speaker A:

I told you, like, no, no, no.

Speaker A:

I want to get people out.

Speaker A:

I really feel like I want to make a difference on this planet.

Speaker A:

And we do love it.

Speaker A:

For those that buy the book, get into the community, we do free coaching calls.

Speaker A:

Every Thursday at 5pm Eastern, there's a free call, just a community call.

Speaker A:

Get on.

Speaker A:

What are you going through?

Speaker A:

And that community blows My mind, like, people get on and share their lives.

Speaker A:

Like, hey, here's what we're going through, like, everything from bankruptcy to divorce to whatever.

Speaker A:

I'm like, okay, cool.

Speaker A:

Now watch this.

Speaker A:

Now that you've admitted it and you're comfortable, let's get to work.

Speaker A:

Let's put a strategy together.

Speaker A:

So again, thegcguide.com man, and I just want to encourage people like, yo, you're still alive.

Speaker B:

That's a fact.

Speaker A:

You're still alive.

Speaker B:

What a blessing.

Speaker A:

So that just means that anything that you want to happen, here's the big thing I want you to hear.

Speaker B:

If you.

Speaker A:

If you did not hear anything else that we said today, anything that you want to happen, close your eyes and allow it to happen.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker A:

Just close your eyes and see it, right?

Speaker A:

Become it.

Speaker A:

And that's where you spend your time.

Speaker A:

When I say spend time on your.

Speaker A:

Like that 30 minutes on your own, it's you seeing yourself as that person that you know who you are, that you know who you can be, right?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Take the can be.

Speaker A:

I'm speaking absolute.

Speaker A:

You know who you are.

Speaker B:

You are.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

That's why you uncomfortable right now.

Speaker A:

Because if you a bum, like, you're not tripping on being a bum.

Speaker A:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker A:

But the fact that you listen to this podcast, the fact that you're searching stuff out, you know who you are, and I'm saying to you is, close your eyes, and that's free, y'.

Speaker A:

All.

Speaker A:

It don't cost nothing.

Speaker A:

Close your eyes and spend time looking at who you are, who that person is, what they're doing, how are they talking to their spouse?

Speaker A:

What's the activities they're doing?

Speaker A:

What is their morning look like?

Speaker A:

And the more you spend time in that vision, guess what, man?

Speaker A:

Reality is the dream now.

Speaker A:

Vision becomes reality.

Speaker A:

Does that make sense?

Speaker B:

That makes too much sense.

Speaker A:

Like, you live in the vision so much.

Speaker A:

And I used to joke when I hear people say, man, you attract what you want.

Speaker A:

Like, no, I get it now.

Speaker A:

It's not even that you, like, you've become the person that.

Speaker A:

This is the stuff that happens, how you operate.

Speaker A:

Like, again, you talk about frequency, energy, vibrations, whatever you want to take it.

Speaker A:

Like, this is the level that you operate on.

Speaker A:

So there's certain things that happen at this level.

Speaker A:

I'm not thinking about feeding my family at this level that Carl is at right now.

Speaker A:

Am I not knock.

Speaker A:

Am I knocking that?

Speaker A:

No, somebody's there.

Speaker A:

They need to figure it out.

Speaker A:

But I need that person there to think about when you're in a position that you're not like, don't just live in this.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

Because this is your reality, and now that's all you see.

Speaker A:

And you can't break free of that.

Speaker A:

Spend time there in who you are, and I guarantee you everything else is going to come with that.

Speaker A:

But you got to live it, experience it first before.

Speaker A:

Right there, before it happens.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

It's not going to happen until you experience it first.

Speaker A:

All right, So I know that's a lot.

Speaker A:

Please take that.

Speaker A:

That's a lot.

Speaker A:

But it's real.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker B:

That's.

Speaker B:

And that's huge.

Speaker B:

That's huge, man.

Speaker B:

I thank you so much for, for your time and for sharing with us that way.

Speaker B:

And really, I thank you personally just because I've been.

Speaker B:

Like I said, I've been listening to you over the last few years at least, and I've learned a lot from you.

Speaker B:

I mean, you mentioned, you know, the crew and the rest of the fellows that you are, you're.

Speaker B:

You're.

Speaker B:

You're moving with and doing some big things all around, but today I really just wanted to take some time and focus on you and chat with you and let you share your perspective with people.

Speaker B:

And funnily, too, I'm not on social media either, so there's some.

Speaker B:

I have the businesses, but there's nothing personal out there.

Speaker B:

It's not really my thing.

Speaker B:

So just like, I. I thought I was unique and a little bit strange with the whole.

Speaker B:

The whole potential thing.

Speaker B:

We have some similar similarities there as well, but.

Speaker B:

Yeah, thanks so much, man.

Speaker B:

I hope we'll do this again.

Speaker B:

We can dive a little deeper into some of the space specifics of some of this stuff.

Speaker B:

But in the meantime, if you've heard this today and you're kind of feeling the way that I felt or the way that car Carlos felt, definitely check out the book, Check out the website.

Speaker B:

That was GCGuy.com, right?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And there's tons of information there.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Thanks so much, Carl.

Speaker B:

Take care, everybody.

Speaker A:

Pleasure, man.

Speaker A:

Thank you, Anthony.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

What a blessing, man.

Speaker B:

Thank you,.

Speaker A:

Sam.
